Vikings: Wanderer, My anger over Torstein’s fate!

You think a measly arrow can knock me down,,, think again!

You think a measly arrow can knock me down,,, think again!

Before I go into the various strange and unexplainable events that took place during this time, I need to express my extreme displeasure and anger over events that led up to the probable death of our friend Torstein. After what has happened to him, I really do not expect him to pull through and survive this  injury or the later mistreatment of it! If and when Torstein dies, I must say that I will forever hold the rest of the men responsible for the death of their friend… all because of they were too busy with enjoyment of mushrooms to notice or offer care to Torstein’s injury in the beginning! We do have knowledge and medical skills of which Floki is familiar with.  Floki did, after all save Ragnar’s life when he was so greviously injured, and they were able to save Rollo’s life as well.  But, did any of these men, such as Floki- who is knowing of such skill- step in at the beginning and say to Torstein, “Hey, that wound looks pretty bad, let me clean it up and see what I can do for it?” NO! they did not. Instead, Ragnar offered the comfort of Freya sleeping with him.  And Rollo offered as his cure for all that ails, a bowl of mushrooms!  So, to all of you who were there enjoying your party of mushrooms and offering no care to him in the beginning, I hope that Torstein’s pain and eventual death will haunt your consciences forever more!

It was obvious that Torstein was suffering great pain from his injury. No, he did not come out and ask for help but one of the others should have used common sense and offered some medical assistance!

An injured Torstein

Torstein in pain Torstein for once I am not hungry

Ragnar to torstein May Freya lie with you tonight and take care of you

Ragnar to torstein May Freya lie with you tonight and take care of you

rollo offers mushrooms as relief

rollo offers mushrooms as relief

No, it was not until they had finished their party that they had a thought or care for their friend’s situation and by then it was too late for anything other than extreme intervention.

torstein can no longer bear the pain

Torstein wants to die

I don't care about that game I want you to cut off my arm

I don’t care about that game I want you to cut off my arm

everything is a blur to Thorstein now

everything is a blur to Thorstein now

I want you to cut off my arm because it's killing me you fools

I want you to cut off my arm because it’s killing me you fools

By this time, Torstein had suffered so greatly and was so desperate for relief from the pain that all he knew was to remove the arm that caused him the pain! It was not until this point that it dawned on his friends how serious and perilous his situation was. He begged them to remove his arm. Bjorn did offer first, but Torstein replied that he wanted Floki to do it.

I want floki to do it

I want floki to do it

floki I suppose so

floki I suppose so

My one thought on this right now is that if Floki had stepped in earlier to aid his friend, he would not have to endure the pain that he would suffer along with Torstein now!

preparing the medical instruments medical instruments being disinfected

are you sure you want to go ahead with this

are you sure you want to go ahead with this

Not my head, my arm! Just cut it off and be done with it!

Not my head, my arm! Just cut it off and be done with it!

Truly, the only thing that took minds of the horror of the act was Torstein’s ability to maintain some humor about his situation! But, when it came time to actually perform the removal, everyone prayed to the Gods for strength to get through it.  Everyone felt the shock and the pain that Torstein felt!

the arm comes off

the arm comes off

calling for Freya and the Gods to help

calling for Freya and the Gods to help

everyone feels the pain

everyone feels the pain

It brought home the harshness and the realities of battle… I can only hope that it had some impact and affect on Porrun as she watched it!

the consequences and ravages of battle

the consequences and ravages of battle

In my personal opinion, it was a tragic and senseless event  that might have been avoided had some people thought to care for a friend before he suffered so much. His fate yet hangs in the balance but I can see no miracle forthcoming…

torstein is still near death

torstein is still near death

what is torstein's fate?

what is torstein’s fate?

I am so very angry and much bitter about this event. I know that Torstein’s injury is a real part of our world and our battles, but in my heart I will hold much resentment against all of those there who allowed it go so far… I am sure that in time I will come to forgiveness but at this moment, I am glad they are all away and are not in my midst!

  2. These are my sentiments exactly. It was a puncture from a weapon, albeit a bad puncture, it could have been cleaned and dressed by the others before the gangrene and infection got that bad. They just basically left his arm to rot.

  3. oh my friend this is how the world of war is, i know they make all this family spirit between them all but in all wars, medieval and the ones today a lot of soldiers die but just tasting the wrong water…or been at the wrong time and place . they can’t be checking everybody . they heal rollo or rangar because they were at the ground , torsteins was walking good…ok with a bad face but everybody has a bad face during war

  4. They were in a foreign land. Floki was able to help heal Rollo and Ragnar with herbs and sages from Kattegat because he was familiar with them and their effects. However, in Wessex, there was no guarantee that Floki could find such remedies with fungus bearing the same properties. Even if he had knowledge of such things, he may not know where to look for them, and if he did, it may have been days before he could reach Torstein with them. That and the fact that directly after a battle, all efforts would have gone into supply count, rest and strategising for the battle that lay ahead (hence the severed heads on the lead boat).

I was also pretty irked. Torstein was one of my favourite characters…
